Working with Genesis Management Group, Bluestone Energy Services has designed and implemented a lighting retrofit for 495 Business Center, securing a $58,900 incentive from National Grid. The project has a one-year return on investment and the facility's annual energy bill will be reduced by $94,000. The lighting project will provide an 800,000 kWh reduction in annual electrical consumption--exceeding original savings estimates. Implementing energy-savings projects leads to money saved on customers' utility bills. Utility rebates are paid out of funds that are collected from the end users. Utilities can generate a profit from administering such programs.
The use of high-efficiency lighting technology will reduce demand, creating less stress on the utility grid.
"Bluestone has performed hundreds of lighting retrofits using the same or similar technologies for many large customers such as Stop and Shop Supermarket Company, Proctor & Gamble, Biogen Idec, and Genzyme to name a few," Gabriel Andreson, Director of Lighting Services at Bluestone Energy Services, said in an interview with FierceEnergy.
The lighting technology showing the most promise today is Light Emitting Diode (LED).
"Because LED is a solid-state technology, improvements are continuing to be made," Andreson said. "Currently, high-efficiency fluorescent systems are generating approximately 90 lumens per watt. Next-generation LED technology is promising up to 130 lumens per watt.
New lighting technologies are being developed that are automated and adjustable. Many of these new technologies have the capability of integrating with demand response programs to make real-time adjustments when needed.
