Clueless in UK: 7,000 smart meters don't lie
According to British Gas data from nearly 7,000 smart meters, 46 percent of business electricity use happens outside of traditional business hours when no one is working or even in the building.
But the waste doesn't stop inside the building. Other common culprits of unnecessary electricity use include lighting parking lots on the weekend when no one is at work.
"Small and medium sized businesses are the backbone of the UK. They tell us that reducing their costs is essential to competing in a challenging economy. However, many don't understand their electricity costs, and how they could reduce them," said Marc England, Managing Director of SME Energy at British Gas Business.
Based on these insights, British Gas concluded that in order for businesses to cut their energy use they needed to understand when and why they use electricity. To this end, British Gas has launched Business Energy Insight to show businesses how, when and where they are using electricity and proactively help them to save money through energy-efficiency measures.
Testing prior to the official launch of the service showed a nearly 50 percent savings on electricity bills.
