Comverge to manage Africa's demand response market
As part of a $27 million, 16-month pilot project, Eskom has selected Comverge to help create and co-manage Africa's first open market for demand response resources. Comverge will deploy its IntelliSOURCE 2.0 platform for Eskom to register, dispatch and manage a newly established demand response market. During the pilot, Comverge will aggregate 500 MWs of load under the IntelliSOURCE system.
Eskom, Africa's largest electricity provider, generates, transmits and distributes approximately 95 percent of the electricity used in South Africa and approximately 45 percent of the electricity used in Africa. With peak demand in South Africa at around 37,000 MW, Comverge will launch a network of curtailment service providers, and help balance supply and demand across a diverse customer base that includes industrial, mining, commercial, and agricultural customers and redistributors.
The pilot will run through March 31, 2013.
