EarthRisk Technologies allows utilities to predict demand up to four weeks out
Through a partnership with EarthRisk Technologies, Earth Networks is enhancing its energy and utilities solutions portfolio to provide the most advanced long-term forecasting technology. The technology, TempRisk, will provide more advanced warning of major heat waves and cold snaps.
For utilities, predicting demand comes down to reliably predicting temperatures as far into the future as possible. The technology can help utilities plan for major spikes in demand for heating and cooling. Utilities that manage their resources efficiently can pass savings along to their customers and insulate ratepayers from major spikes in energy prices.
"The science of weather prediction has made tremendous strides over the past half-century. Meteorologists are now equipped with tools that allow them to reliably predict the daily weather in many locations for about a week into the future," said EarthRisk CEO Stephen Bennett in an interview. "Beyond about one week, however, accurate numerical weather prediction declines rapidly. Only a few computer models are used to research weather prediction at lead times longer than two weeks. These models remain in a scientific research framework due to the highly chaotic nature of small-scale weather features. Many meteorologists note a "black hole" of reliable forecast information in week two and beyond."
EarthRisk has developed a new approach to help meteorologists predict the weather as far as three to four weeks out.
"Our proprietary algorithms have been developed after years of university research focused on linking historic weather patterns around the globe to subsequent severe hot and cold events in various regions across the U.S., Europe and Asia," said Bennett. "Our methodology enables meteorologists to extend their predictions beyond the range of typical weather forecasts. We focus on the weather two-to-four weeks into the future and we only focus on the risk for severe weather events."
