Metrus to finance Better Buildings Challenge

Metrus has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to be a financing partner within the Better Buildings Challenge (BBC) program. Metrus will finance 100 percent of the up-front cost of energy-efficiency projects at private sector commercial, industrial and institutional facilities. Metrus will also finance a range of energy-efficiency technologies, including LED lighting, smart grid-related control systems, high-efficiency pumps and motors, chillers, boilers and furnaces.

"Metrus will utilize its proven efficiency services agreement (ESA) structure to develop and finance projects for chosen customers to help them meet the ambitious BBC program goal of reducing commercial building energy use in the U.S. by 20 percent by 2020," Bob Hinkle, President and CEO of Metrus, said in an interview with FierceEnergy.

Utilities can partner with Metrus to provide their customers with comprehensive energy-efficiency services and financing solutions. Under metrus' ESA structure, customers can implement complex efficiency improvement projects immediately without any up-front cost or project performance risk. Customers only pay for realized energy savings that result from a project, meaning payments to Metrus are solely based on a cost per unit of energy saved (for example, a cost per kWh of electricity saved from a project).

"ESA payments to Metrus are set below a customer's current utility rate so, not only do customers avoid any up-front project costs, but they also enjoy immediate cost savings resulting from energy saved," Hinkle said. "The bundling of energy-efficiency retrofits and smart grid technologies makes both economic sense and enhances the overall performance of projects for customers."
