Smart meters finish 2011 on high

Smart meter deployments rose significantly during 2011, reaching 19.2 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2011, according to a new tracker report from Pike Research. This is a 5.3 percent increase over the previous quarter.

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) smart meter deployments covered several million customers from three major North American utilities, according to the tracker. Utilities involved included Consumers Energy (1.8 million), BC Hydro (1.8 million) and Hydro-Quebec (3.75 million). Landis+Gyr holds 25 percent of the share of the smart meter market, Itron 22 percent, and Sensus and GE Energy both hold 16 percent.

The report also notes that China is in the beginning stages of its smart meter deployments.
