The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) has recognized several utilities with it's Inspiring Efficiency Awards for their innovative programs aimed to assist Midwestern businesses and consumers save energy and money. The utility winners include AEP Ohio, Xcel Energy and Nicor Gas.

AEP received an Education Award for educating thousands of Ohio students about energy efficiency by helping them install and monitor energy-saving devices such as LED nightlights at home via the e3smart program.

Nicor Gas received a Marketing Award for its Summer Staycation campaign which encouraged residential customers to purchase high-efficiency products for their homes.

Xcel Energy won two awards in Education and Impact. In education, the Kilowatt Crackdown campaign received honors for removing more than 13 million kWh off the grid by challenging business owners in the Twin Cities business to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. In impact, Xcel was recognized for its Computer Efficiency rebate program, which achieved energy savings of nearly 33 million kWh by encouraging computer companies to manufacture and sell more energy-efficient PCs to customers in Xcel's Minnesota service area. Further, the program has driven energy-efficiency advancements to the overall PC market.

Although not a utility, the Leadership Award winner has heavily influenced the utility industry. Former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Commissioner Cheryl was recognized for addressing complex regulatory issues and promoting energy-efficiency initiatives both in Ohio and nationally.

"These trend-setting programs will have a ripple effect across the nation and the world, saving businesses and consumers millions in energy costs," said MEEA Executive Director Jay Wrobel.
