Xcel completes $90M in transmission line upgrades

Xcel Energy has completed $93.3 million in high-voltage transmission line upgrade  projects to boost reliability and capacity in the Northwest Texas Panhandle.

The upgrades came, in part, as the result of tremendous economic growth in local communities being spurred by agriculture and energy-related industries. Further, a study in 2010 by the Southwest Power Pool identified transmission enhancement projects across the region it deemed necessary. The SPP is a regional transmission organization that coordinates reliability on the transmission system serving portions of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Xcel recently announced intention to add $33.6 million on its high-voltage electricity transmission system in north, east and south Amarillo. Those funds will be invested between now and the end of 2013.

More transmission enhancements could be in store beyond 2013.
