Green Mountain Energy Company offers tailored information to customers

Tools

Green Mountain Energy company is educating some New York City and Westchester County residents about solar energy through the Sun Club, a program where Green Mountain's New York customers can help donate solar energy technology to worthy local nonprofits.

Green Mountain sales tents were in Madison Square Park across from the iconic Flatiron Building on the day of the launch of the New York chapter of the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. Throughout the day, agents handed out sunflowers and told park patrons about their ability to choose pollution-free electricity from Green Mountain and support solar in New York through the Sun Club.

Each solar installation will be accompanied by at a minimum of on-site signage about the system, how it works and its benefits. Each educational component of the donations is different and tailored to the recipient.

"For example, our Texas chapter donated solar arrays to several colleges which have incorporated the installations into their learning curriculum for students,"  Tony Napolillo, Sun Club Manger, Green Mountain Energy Company, told FierceEnergy. "The Texas chapter has also donated solar arrays to several museums which have either used the arrays as interactive learning tools or used part of the donation funds to build educational exhibits inside the museum."

Social media is used to keep Sun Club members up to date on the club's activities and solicit new members. It was also vital in the launch of the New York chapter as the main communication vehicle informing New Yorkers about the launch party in Madison Square Park by Green Mountain and the Vanity Belles.

"The response from New Yorkers has been extremely positive and encouraging just has it has been in Texas where our first chapter of the Sun Club launched almost 10 years ago," Napolillo said.  "Sun Club members are looking for an easy way to make an even greater difference. They appreciate the ability to contribute to two great causes: the promotion of pollution-free energy in the form of new solar construction and educational components directly in their communities; and assisting worthy non-profits save money on their electricity bills so they can put those funds into achieving their missions."

In both markets it is a unique concept not being replicated by anyone else, according to Napolillo.

"Utility consumers are looking for an easy way to give back to their communities. Utilities can be a partner helping them give back in tangible ways they can see and experience," Napolillo said.
